In the first reading God instructs Moses to make a bronze serpent and to put it high on a pole for everyone to see. The gospel makes reference to this event by saying, “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” What are we to make of all this lifting up business and the snake?
